The One Tool Your Competitors Can't Copy: YOU.

Your audience is surrounded by coaches, consultants, creators, and community owners using many of the same tools to market many of the same promises:

Grow your audience. Scale your income. Post more content. Run more ads. Use better AI prompts.

The advice isn’t always wrong. The problem is that the same tools are producing the same-looking businesses: cookie-cutter templates, AI-generated hooks, thumbnails, lead magnets—and even the same T-shirts, mugs, and hats.

When everyone uses the same tools to stand out, everyone looks the same.

You Can Be Better and Still Blend In

You may have more experience, produce better results, and own a process that genuinely works better. But if your business looks, sounds, and feels like everyone else’s, your audience may never see the difference.

The answer isn't doing more of the same.

It’s about giving people a way to experience what makes your business different.

This is where merch becomes far more than a product with a logo on it.

Start With the Moment, Not the Product

Most merch decisions begin with the object.

  • Should we order mugs?

  • Would people wear a T-shirt?

  • What's trending right now?

That usually leads to the same products everyone else is already giving away... the only difference, the logo dropped onto each one.

A better place to start is with the moment:

  • What happens after the coaching call ends?

  • Where does the client get stuck?

  • What do they forget?

  • What action do I want them to take?

  • What kind of uselful product would make their work clearer and easier to achieve?

Once you identify that moment, the right merch idea becomes much more interesting.

And the question becomes:

What does my client need when I’m not there?

What This Could Look Like for a Dog Trainer

A dog trainer may spend a training session showing a client how to redirect pulling, respond to barking, stop jumping, or regain the dog’s attention outside.

During the session, it makes sense.

Then the client takes the dog for a walk the next morning. Another dog appears across the street, the leash tightens, and suddenly they can’t remember what to do first.

Instead of giving every new client a generic tote or water bottle, the trainer could create a Walk Better Kit.

It could include a treat pouch, clicker, leash light, and a custom Framework Deck of training cards built around the trainer’s method.

Each card could address a real-life problem, name the situation, and give the trainer’s exact cue, timing, and next step—so the client has the trainer’s method right in their hands when their session is over.

The trainer’s process is no longer buried in a follow-up email. And the product doesn’t just carry the trainer’s logo, it helps the client get a better result.

What This Could Look Like for a Bookkeeper

Bookkeepers have a very different problem.

Clients send incomplete records, miss deadlines, put expenses in the wrong categories, and sometimes deliver twelve months of financial chaos in one giant email.

Another coffee mug isn’t going to fix that.

A bookkeeper could create a Month-End Kit around the work clients need to do every month.

It might include labeled receipt envelopes, a desktop document organizer, a deadline calendar, and a card deck answering common questions:

  • Is this deductible?

  • Where should this expense be categorized?

  • What records should I keep?

  • What needs to be submitted before the books can close?

  • What should I do with a personal purchase made on the business card?

Now the product helps the client stay organized while making the bookkeeper’s process easier to follow.

It becomes a physical system that supports the service they already provide.

What This Could Look Like for a Leadership Consultant

A leadership consultant can run a workshop on feedback, delegation, conflict, and accountability.

Everyone in the room may understand the material.

Then Monday arrives.

A manager needs to address a missed deadline, respond to an employee who becomes defensive, or tell someone their performance is not meeting expectations.

The slides are saved somewhere and aren't found easily. Here's a better option:

The consultant could create a Better Conversations Kit.

It might include a Framework Deck with cards for how to give feedback, setting expectations, delegating work, addressing poor performance, and managing conflict.

Each custom card face could include the situation, an opening question, language to avoid, and a clear next step.

Add a conversation prep pad that helps the client define the issue, the outcome they need, and how they want to open the conversation.

The product extends the value of the workshop without requiring the consultant to be in the room.

That's the Difference

None of these ideas began with:

“What should we put our logo on?”

They began with the client’s problem, the moment it happens, and what would actually help.

That changes the product completely. Instead of choosing something generic and adding a logo, you create something connected to the business, the audience, and the result.

Your Merch Should Have a Job

Merch can welcome a client, reinforce a method, thank someone for a referral, improve onboarding, recognize and reward progress, generate revenue, all while keeping your brand visible.

But it can't do all of those things at once.

Before choosing a product, ask:

  • Who is it for?

  • When will they receive it?

  • What should they do with it?

  • Why would they keep using it?

  • What part of your brand or service should it reinforce?

Those questions lead to much better ideas than scrolling through a catalog and choosing whatever looks expensive. (Or worse, asking how many pens you can get for the cheapest price.)

"Slap-A-Logo on something" never works. It underscores who you are and what you do. Because when you don't put thought into something -- it shows.

If Everyone Looks the Same, You Become Part of the Crowd

Standing out doesn’t require creating something strange for the sake of being different.

It requires making choices that are specific to your business and useful to your audience.

A product tied to your process is difficult for a competitor to copy convincingly because it comes from the way you actually work.

That's the opportunity. Your opportunity.
